You have to admit here the way Tom Cruise sets up Jack Nicholson in the scene is exceptional. Jack steals the scene because of the speech but Tom Cruise is every bit the A-Lister. Fantastic acting from everyone here

One of the greatest scenes in movie history. Hands down. The whole "You can't handle the truth" penetrated pop culture for over a decade after this movie, and even people who sadly never saw the whole movie knew of that line and this scene. Powerful stuff by two great actors.

@Paul Hartley did you watch the whole movie? he cracked because he was so arrogant that he couldn't stand not saying it.. he "did his job and would do it again", and so deeply resents having to explain himself to a pretty-boy lawyer (or anyone really) that remaining silent felt weak to him. He wants to assert dominance in every situation, so it got the best of him here.

I heard once in an interview that Jack Nicholson wanted to do this straight up in 1 take, no rehearsals & 1 take is what they shot… everyone stayed in character & followed Jack’s lead & we now have forever more the most amazing, gripping, pin dropping piece of acting that will be loved forever. It’s a great, great film that I can watch over and over & still do. Ten hut. 👨🏼‍✈️⚓️😍🙌🏼

As great as Nicholson's acting is, Tom Cruise deserves just as much praise. Simply electrifying performance and very underrated because the focus is always on Jack. This is one of the greatest scenes in movie history and Cruise is phenomenal. Similar to how Nicholson got all the praise from Batman yet Keaton was amazing.

@Kaioken 99 you still seem to be misunderstanding. I'm talking about the historical fact that Nicolson's performance was generally/universally praised compared to Keaton, exactly like Nicolson/Cruise. This is not a discussion about our personal opinion here. Obviously and it is more than implied, I think there was injustice to Keaton just like I think there was injustice to Cruise, and I think both actors (Keaton and Cruise) did tremendous jobs. That's the whole point and the reason for the analogy.

Love this scene. The power of the way it's delivered by Nicholson. The truth in the words he spoke. The prevailing truth as well though, in his arrest at the end. His character, like many real characters, doesn't understand the power of his position. He's trapped in the importance of what he does, so much, that he begins to believe, it's all that matters. Above all else. The genius of the writing in the scene is perfectly cemented by his feigned shock that he's being charged with a crime. Even though he knows he committed one. He truly believes it should be overlooked in the interests of his goal. Will always be a masterpiece of filmmaking.

Well, he's kinda right about what he does. There is no world where everybody's happy, so military has to defend their interests selfishly. Except he should've transferred the guy before the accident, I'm sure someone more motivated would apply for marine position. Instead he tried to make marine out of non-marine material. Such kind of psychological training and pressure should be applied for soldiers who happened to be at army involuntarily to bring them up to speed about how things on war actually are, but not for the supposed motivated professionals, where best of the best are selected during peace time.

That's not feigned shock - that's real, which makes his indignation all the more powerful. He knows what he did was against the "rules" but he believes he's above those rules and/or they don't apply to him, and how dare the mere mortals in the justice system charge him, the almighty, with a crime.

I love the colonel acting, it shows how people who spent their life in the army can have a vastly different logical thinking. He is 100% convinced that what he did was right and has no shame of admitting it. Edit: I understand that marines are different than the army in the US, but I was making a broader point where pretty much all soldiers have an experience which gives them another prospective and a different logical thinking than someone who never had to participate in conflict.

He was shameless. "... and when it went wrong, you cut these guys loose!" And then he instituted a cover up: fixed the flight logs, drafted transfer orders and got Kiefer to lie on the witness stand. I think that's why Rob Reiner made a point of showing Nicholson snap his jacket back in place and focusing on picking up the hat: he'd committed actions unbefitting of the uniform

Dude what are you talking about? That’s narcissistic justification. It’s not logical at all. This is perhaps PTSD and the character Jack Nicholson played is what someone who’d behave for he snapped at some point. That’s what war does but it doesn’t make it right.

This is a great scene. Watched many times. I also recall the dialogue near the ending between the two marines being charged has summed up the theme of the movie rather nicely too. The dialogue infers one's strength (in this case soldiering strength) is meant to serve and protect those who haven't had that (level of) strength, not to bully them.

Jack Nicholson is an actor that enhances every production he's in, yet somehow avoids "stealing" scenes. Every role of his I can think of became what it was (read: great) through brilliant chemistry with his fellow actors. It must be an incredibly enriching experience to work alongside him.

Caffey did a great job of slowly riling Jessup up to the point where he wanted to admit it. By telling him "he didn't dismiss him and to sit down" and also by taking a tone with him like he was the commander giving him the orders on the stand which Jessup hated and was not accustomed to. -Great Flick

Can we take a moment to bask in the glory that is Aaron Sorkin's brilliant screenplay and screenwriting? "A Few Good Men" was written as a play by Sorkin when he was just 26 years old, almost fresh out of Syracuse University's fine Drama and Film School. His sister was a Navy JAG and had told him a story about a young Marine recruit who was murdered during a hazing incident at Gitmo in the early 80's. Sorkin's innate ability to put into words rapid fire conversation about people who had to think quickly on their feet in life-altering dramatic situations would serve him well not only in "A Few Good Men" but also when invited by Steven Spielberg to "punch up and polish" Schindler's List" in 1993 and later in the multi-Emmy award winning tv show, "The West Wing".

Not many people know this but in preparation for this part Jack Nicholson actually did order a Code Red, and a crew member was beaten to death. The crew members widow had planned to sue the production company, but when she saw the movie, she agreed that the performance that Jack gave was actually worth the death of her husband.

This is possibly one of the most well-acted scenes in cinema, particularly by Nicholsen, yet I still have problems wrapping my brain around why it would have happened that way. I know ego is the basis for Cruise's character pushing the witness, but it doesn't really make sense that a commanding marine with as much battle hardened experience as he has would openly crack like that as if he wasn't aware of the consequences after fabricating a transfer order and doctoring the log books.

I think Cruise tricked him into thinking he had the airmen ready to testify, when he didn't. Which would have meant the Colonel was kind of pinned anyway, and didn't have that much to lose. At least that is one explanation I read, related to your question, which we've all wondered about I guess.

Jack Nicholson had played phenomenal. The script is awesome. Acting is legendary. One of the best and most sophisticated portrayals of an antagonist character. In fact, most of what the colonel said is true and he prosecuted himself already. He says: "We follow orders or people die. It's just that simple." That's exactly what happened: The colonel didn't follow his superior commander admiral's explicit written order forbidding the code red. As a result of his disobedience, people (Santiago and Markinson) died. In fact, he found himself guilty, and that might be the reason he confessed.
